Social media allows leaders to amplify messages and make an impact. From presidents to deans, leaders are active online, engaging with their campus and stakeholders. This session includes a trend summary from a digital leadership scholar, a nationwide analysis of executive Twitter activity, university case studies, and a take-home approach to developing an executive’s digital presence.

Liz Gross

CEO

Liz Gross is an entrepreneur, speaker, author and instructor, specializing in social media. Her professional super powers include designing and analyzing market research, applying social media strategy to multiple areas of the business, and using social listening to develop consumer insights and assist with reputation management. She leads a team of higher ed nerds at Campus Sonar who help campuses find and analyze conversations that matter and identify insights that drive campus strategy. She holds a Ph.D. from Cardinal Stritch University, a master’s degree from Marquette University, and a bachelor’s degree from UW-Stevens Point.

Josie Ahlquist

Research Associate & Instructor

Josie Ahlquist is a research associate and instructor at Florida State University, creating curriculum to build digital literacy and leadership skills for undergraduates up to campus executives. She brings 15 years of experience in higher education. Her research focuses on young adults digital experiences, senior executives online leadership practices and digital leadership pedagogy. She is published in the Handbook of Student Affairs Administration, The Journal of Leadership Studies, New Directions in Student Services and New Directions in Student Leadership. Her blog and podcast, Josie & The Podcast, have received accolades from Inside Higher Ed and the Chronicle of Higher Education.

Gail Martineau

Senior Manager, Digital Media and Strategy

Gail Martineau serves as the Senior Manager for Digital Media and Strategy at The Ohio State University, where she oversees President Michael V. Drake’s social presence and digital brand. She works across the university and with partner organizations to ensure Ohio State’s strategic messages are reaching the right audiences through the appropriate channels. Martineau previously served as head of communications in local government and managed web and social for WBNS-10TV News, Columbus, Ohio’s CBS affiliate. Martineau earned her master’s degree in digital communications from Syracuse University’s S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications and her bachelor’s degree from Denison University.
