Managing Multi-Functional Teams

Wearing multiple hats is not a new concept in higher ed. As a independent contributor, it can be complicated enough to be the content editor AND the CMS administrator AND the front AND back-end developer.

But as a manager, how do you effectively manage a TEAM of these multi-hat individuals when each employee is supporting multiple business operations? When you manage a database analyst, an application analyst, and a web administrator, how can you be the person who can competently answer not just WHAT you are doing, but the WHY and HOW to upper administration while being a serious and sensitive boss to your team’s needs?

How can you help your team conduct multiple projects of varying importance, impact, and duration on a dozen different applications? How do you help your team scale thru growth?

This session will address being “fluent enough” in all of your team’s applications to support them without getting in their way on day-to-day operations, how to balance team efforts to avoid burning them out, project management across internal divisions and workloads, disaster recovery and business continuity (aka “What happens when Mike wins the lottery and mic drops on the way out?”), hiring, mentoring, team building, time management, and more.

Catherine Scholz has been in the digital industry since the early '90s, starting life as a web designer and developer and earning a B.S. in Computer Science from Marquette University. She has a broad depth of experience, from developer to project manager to director, in industries from higher education to private corporations and marketing agencies. As the Director of Data Applications & Systems at the Milwaukee School of Engineering, Scholz and her team are responsible for the ever-expanding suite of enterprise software that run university operations and the integrations between them.
